Children often communicate big feelings through behavior before they can explain them with words. Anger, tears, withdrawal, clinginess, physical complaints, or changes in sleep may signal that a child feels overwhelmed, worried, disappointed, or unsafe.
Adults can help by staying calm, naming possible emotions, listening without judgment, validating the feeling, and setting clear limits on unsafe behavior. Avoid forcing a conversation in the heat of the moment; offer another opportunity when the child is calmer and more able to connect.
“When children feel heard and emotionally safe, they are better able to learn words, skills, and healthy ways to express what is happening inside.”
